Kapillaarivuoto, also known as capillary leak syndrome, is a rare and potentially life-threatening medical condition. It is characterized by the abnormal leakage of plasma from blood vessels into surrounding tissues. This leakage causes a sudden drop in blood pressure and can lead to organ dysfunction.

The exact cause of capillary leak syndrome is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a widespread malfunction of the endothelial cells that line blood vessels. These cells normally form a tight barrier, preventing plasma from escaping. In capillary leak syndrome, this barrier becomes compromised, allowing fluid and proteins to leak out.

Capillary leak syndrome can manifest with a variety of symptoms. These often include sudden onset of fatigue, muscle aches, and abdominal pain. As the condition progresses, individuals may experience a significant drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, and even shock. Swelling (edema) can occur in various parts of the body, and fluid can accumulate in the lungs, causing difficulty breathing.

Diagnosis typically involves blood tests to assess electrolyte levels, kidney function, and protein levels, as well as imaging studies to evaluate fluid accumulation. Treatment focuses on supportive care and managing the consequences of plasma leakage. This often includes intravenous fluid resuscitation to maintain blood pressure and organ perfusion, as well as medications to support organ function. In some cases, high-dose immunoglobulin therapy may be used. The prognosis depends on the severity of the syndrome and the promptness of treatment.
