Kantutjevning, or edge leveling, is a finishing process aimed at producing even, straight, and flush edges on a workpiece by removing irregularities along the edge. The term is Norwegian and combines kant (edge) with utjevning (leveling or smoothing). The goal is to ensure a precise fit between parts and a uniform appearance along the edge.

The concept is used across several industries, including woodworking, metalworking, plastics, and construction. In woodworking, kantutjevning often involves jointing the edge of boards with a jointer or routing to produce a flat, square edge for gluing or for seamless edge-to-edge alignment. In metalworking and plastics, milling, grinding, or finishing operations may be performed to achieve a straight, planar edge. In tiling, paneling, or cabinetry, ensuring consistent edge level is important for proper assembly and finish.

Techniques and tools vary by material. Common methods include planing or jointing with hand or power tools, routing for edge trimming, milling for precise edge geometry, and sanding or grinding to remove micro-variations. A typical workflow includes inspecting the edge, reference marking, removing high spots, flattening and straightening the edge, and verifying straightness and squareness with a straightedge or square, often followed by clamping or bonding for assembly.
