Kantföljande, or edge-following, is a term used in image analysis and robotics to describe methods that aim to track the boundary of a region, object, or space. In computer vision, kantföljande refers to techniques that extract and follow the contour of shapes in an image, enabling tasks such as object recognition, shape analysis, and precise measurement.

In image processing, kantföljande approaches include starting from a seed edge pixel and iteratively moving along adjacent edge pixels, edge-detection followed by contour tracing, and more advanced models such as active contours (snakes) and level set methods that evolve a contour to fit a boundary by minimizing an energy functional. Other methods combine region-growing with boundary constraints. These techniques must cope with noise, texture, occlusions, and varying illumination, and often require careful parameter tuning and initialization to produce stable boundaries.

In robotics, kantföljande describes following the boundary of a workspace or an object using sensors such as infrared, ultrasonic, LIDAR, or tactile inputs. Control strategies aim to maintain a desired distance to the boundary or to stay on a contour, frequently using feedback control (for example, PID) to adjust motion. Applications include autonomous cleaning devices, perimeter inspection, agricultural field monitoring, and guided navigation along object outlines.

Challenges common to kantföljande include handling weak or broken edges, cluttered scenes, dynamic boundaries, and the need for real-time performance. Evaluation typically relies on boundary accuracy measures, contour similarity metrics, and task-specific goals such as successful object delineation or stable following along a path.
