kanclerz

Kanclerz is a title used in Poland and other European contexts to designate a high-ranking official responsible for the administration of a chancellery—the office in charge of drafting, authenticating, sealing, and archiving official documents. The word derives from Latin cancellarius, through the French chancelier and the German Kanzler, and has been used across various states to denote a senior administrative counselor.

In medieval and early modern Poland, the royal administration included two principal chanellery offices: the Grand Chancellor of the Crown (kanclerz wielki koronny) and the Grand Chancellor of Lithuania (kanclerz wielki litewski). Each headed the respective chancery, supervising the preparation of royal letters, decrees, and diplomatic correspondence, and exercising oversight of the royal seal. The Grand Chancellor was typically a leading political figure and adviser to the king, while the Court Chancellor managed the king’s personal and court correspondence.

In the broader German-speaking and Central European world, Kanzler or Kanzlei referred to the chief official in charge of the chancery, with powers that varied by state. The office could be central to governance, and over time many states developed national or princely versions of the office, which in modern times evolved into positions such as Reichskanzler or Bundeskanzler, or became largely ceremonial.

Today, the term is largely historical in Poland, though it survives in certain ceremonial or institutional contexts. In some universities and religious institutions, a kanclerz may be the chief administrative or financial officer, performing duties similar to those of a chancellor in other systems rather than serving as head of government.
