Chancellor is a title used for a senior official or officeholder in various political, ecclesiastical, and academic systems. The term derives from the Latin cancellarius, meaning a secretary or keeper of the seal, and historically signified a trusted official responsible for records, diplomacy, and governance.

In modern states, the role and authority of a chancellor vary. In Germany and Austria, the chancellor is the head of government, directing the federal or national administration and chairing the cabinet. The chancellor is usually the lead figure of the governing coalition and is appointed by the president with the confidence of the legislature; the position can be strengthened or weakened by parliamentary support.

In the United Kingdom, the title appears in several offices. The Chancellor of the Exchequer is the finance minister responsible for economic policy. The Lord Chancellor was a historic senior official combining legislative, executive, and judicial functions; constitutional reforms have reduced those powers, and today the office is primarily a cabinet role focused on justice and constitutional affairs.

In Switzerland, the Federal Chancellor is the head of the Federal Chancellery and serves as the chief of staff to the Federal Council, coordinating government work rather than acting as the head of government, since the Swiss system relies on a collegial Federal Council.

Other uses include the academic sphere, where a chancellor is often the ceremonial or occasionally executive head of a university, and various religious institutions that have employed chancellors as senior officials.
