Kalsiumsilikaatti, also known as calcium silicate, is a inorganic compound with the chemical formula Ca₂SiO₄. It is a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium silicate or can be synthesized by reacting silica (SiO₂) with slaked lime (Ca(OH)₂) at high temperatures. The resulting product is a white to off-white crystalline material that is insoluble in water but dissolves slowly in acidic solutions.

The compound is recognized for its excellent fire-resistant and insulating properties. In the construction industry it is widely used as a building material in the form of fireproof panels, cementitious binders, and protective coatings for structural steel. Calcium silicate boards, also called “fireboards,” are produced by reacting lime and silica in a high-temperature reactor that promotes the formation of a dense, fibrous matrix. These boards retain structural integrity up to temperatures of 2000 °C and are therefore integral to modern fire‑protective cladding systems.

In addition to fire protection, calcium silicate serves as a backbone material in high-performance composites, especially in aerospace and automotive applications where weight reduction and thermal stability are critical. The material’s low thermal conductivity makes it suitable for thermal insulation in high‑temperature furnaces, ovens, and industrial reactors. It also finds use as an additive in ceramic formulations to improve strength and reduce shrinkage.

Because calcium silicate can be produced from inexpensive raw materials and is recyclable, it is considered environmentally friendly. Its application in building components contributes to energy savings by reducing heating and cooling demands. Research continues into optimizing its mechanical properties and expanding its use in green building technologies.
