Kalfsleder is a traditional type of sled used in Scandinavian countries, particularly in Norway and Sweden. It is designed for short to medium distance transportation of goods and people across snowy terrain.

The kalfsleder sled is typically made from wood, often with a simplified frame structure to minimize weight while maintaining strength. The runner, or sled bottom, is usually constructed from a single piece of wood, carved to provide a smooth gliding surface. The usable length can vary but classical designs are around 1-3 meters in length and 20-30 centimeters in width.

Kalfsleder can be used for both transportation and recreation purposes. In traditional settings, they are used for ferrying goods between snowy villages or for transporting people across frozen lakes during the winter months. However, in modern times, the sleds are also employed for recreational purposes, such as skiing or other winter sports in areas where cross-country skiing is practiced.

The use of kalfsleder predated the advent of more modern forms of transportation, such as snowmobiles or airplanes, in the snowy regions. Prior to the widespread use of these vehicles, transportation across snowy terrain often relied on kalfsleder.
