kModellen

kModellen is a term used to describe a family of statistical or mathematical models in which a parameter k represents the level of complexity, typically reflecting the number of parameters, components, or latent variables included in the model. The concept is applied across disciplines such as statistics, econometrics, psychology, and genomics, where model complexity must be balanced against the risk of overfitting.

In a kModellen framework, a model is specified with a fixed k, yielding a functional form such as y = f_k(x; theta_k) + error, where theta_k contains k parameters. When k increases, the model gains flexibility to fit the data more closely, but this also raises the chance of capturing noise rather than the underlying signal. Consequently, selecting an appropriate k is a central task, typically guided by information criteria like AIC or BIC, or through cross-validation methods.

Variants of kModellen include linear and nonlinear regression with k parameters, factor models with k latent factors, and mixture models with k components.
