Külmutusaineteid is a broad term encompassing substances used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems to facilitate heat transfer. These materials undergo phase changes, absorbing heat during evaporation and releasing it during condensation, thereby cooling enclosed spaces. Historically, various compounds have been employed, each with its own set of properties and environmental impact.

Early refrigerants included ammonia, sulfur dioxide, and methyl chloride. While effective, these substances often posed safety risks due to their toxicity or flammability. The development of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the mid-20th century offered safer alternatives. CFCs like R-12 became widely popular due to their stability and low toxicity. However, their significant contribution to ozone layer depletion led to their phasedown under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol.

Following the ban on CFCs, hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) were introduced as transitional replacements. HCFCs, such as R-22, have a lower ozone depletion potential but still contribute to it. Consequently, HCFCs are also being phased out.

Current refrigeration technologies increasingly utilize hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) and hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs). HFCs, like R-134a, do not deplete the ozone layer but are potent greenhouse gases. HFOs represent a newer generation of refrigerants with very low global warming potentials, making them more environmentally friendly. Research continues to explore natural refrigerants like CO2, ammonia, and hydrocarbons, which offer excellent thermodynamic properties and minimal environmental impact, though they may present different safety or efficiency challenges depending on the application. The selection of a refrigerant depends on factors such as operating temperature, system design, safety regulations, and environmental considerations.
