Jäteaine may be classified as hazardous waste or non-hazardous. Hazardous waste is determined by properties such as flammability, toxicity, corrosivity, or ecotoxicity. Proper classification informs handling, storage, transport, and treatment methods.

Responsibilities and handling: The holder of jäteaine is responsible for correct classification, safe storage, labeling, and arranging for collection and treatment by licensed waste management operators. Documentation and traceability are required, including recording generation, destination, and final disposal or recovery. In many cases, large producers must prepare a waste management plan and maintain waste records.

Recycling and disposal: Many jäteaine can be recycled or recovered as raw materials, depending on quality and regulatory approvals; others must be disposed of at approved facilities. The aim is to minimize environmental risk and to maximize material recovery when possible.
