The primary function of any suspension system is to manage the vertical movement of the wheels relative to the body of the vehicle. This isolation of the chassis from road shock is crucial for both passenger comfort and vehicle handling.

There are broadly two categories: independent suspension and dependent suspension. In an independent suspension system, each wheel can move vertically without directly affecting the wheel on the opposite side. This allows for better control and a smoother ride, especially on uneven surfaces. Common types of independent suspension include MacPherson struts, double wishbones, and multi-link suspensions. MacPherson struts are widely used due to their simplicity and cost-effectiveness, combining the shock absorber and coil spring into a single unit. Double wishbone systems offer excellent wheel control and are often found in performance vehicles. Multi-link systems use several links to control wheel movement with a high degree of precision.

Dependent suspension systems, on the other hand, link the wheels on opposite sides together. This means that when one wheel encounters an obstacle, it affects the position of the other wheel. Solid axles are a common example of dependent suspension, often found on the rear of trucks and some older passenger cars. While simpler and more robust, they generally offer less refinement in terms of ride comfort and handling compared to independent systems. The choice of suspension type depends on factors such as vehicle purpose, cost, desired performance characteristics, and overall vehicle design.
