Jokivarsien is a Finnish geographical and ecological term that refers to the riverbank and adjacent floodplain zones along rivers. The area is defined by interactions among flowing water, soils deposited by the river, and riparian vegetation. The term is commonly used in geographic descriptions, land-use planning, and environmental assessments to describe the ecology and management needs of lands immediately adjacent to waterways.

These zones are shaped by hydrological processes such as erosion during high flow, sediment deposition during floods, and seasonal water level fluctuations. The width and characteristics of jokivarsien vary with river size, gradient, and human alterations such as dikes or reservoirs. Over time, natural processes can create diverse microhabitats: unvegetated sandbars, willow thickets, wet meadows, and marshes.
