Jezdnia is the part of a road that is intended for the movement of motor vehicles. It constitutes the driving surface and is distinct from other elements of the roadway, such as sidewalks (chodnik), shoulders (pobocze), medians and road furniture. The jezdnia is typically surfaced with asphalt concrete or cement concrete and must withstand traffic loads, weather, and drainage requirements. It is divided into driving lanes, known as pas ruchu, whose number and width depend on the road category and traffic volume. On a two-way road with a single carriageway, a single jezdnia carries traffic in both directions; on divided roads there are two separate jezdnie, one for each direction, separated by a median or barrier.

The construction of a jezdnia includes a wearing course on top of base and subbase layers, with drainage and compaction ensuring structural integrity. Road markings, traffic signs, and lighting guide and regulate the use of the jezdnia, including lane discipline, turning lanes, and priority rules. In urban areas, the outer edge of the jezdnia is often accompanied by a curb and a shoulder that provides emergency refuge or space for cyclists.

Maintenance of the jezdnia involves resurfacing, patching, crack sealing, and the management of wear and deformation to maintain safety and ride quality. Changes in traffic demand or safety considerations can lead to lane additions, speed adjustments, or reconstruction that alters the jezdnia’s structure and capacity.
