Jarrunestettä, known in English as brake fluid, is a hydraulic fluid used in brake systems of automobiles and other vehicles. It is a non-compressible liquid that transmits force, allowing the driver's foot pressure on the brake pedal to be amplified and applied to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders, which then press the brake pads or shoes against the rotors or drums to slow or stop the vehicle.

Brake fluid plays a critical role in the safe operation of a vehicle. It must have a high boiling point to prevent it from vaporizing under the extreme heat generated during braking, as vapor bubbles would compress and lead to brake failure. It also needs to have a low freezing point and resist corrosion to protect the metal components of the brake system.

There are several types of brake fluid, commonly categorized by their DOT (Department of Transportation) rating. DOT 3, DOT 4, and DOT 5.1 are glycol-ether-based fluids, which are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the atmosphere. This moisture can lower the boiling point of the fluid over time, necessitating periodic replacement. DOT 5 fluid is silicone-based and non-hygroscopic, but it is not compatible with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1 fluids and can lead to seal damage if mixed.

It is essential to use the correct type of brake fluid specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Regular inspection and replacement of brake fluid are crucial maintenance tasks to ensure optimal braking performance and safety. Over time, contaminants and moisture can degrade the fluid, reducing its effectiveness and potentially damaging brake system components.
