jaCompositemateriaalien is a nonstandard term that appears in a small number of sources to denote composite materials. Composite materials are engineered materials made from two or more constituent materials with different properties, which remain distinct at the macroscopic level, delivering characteristics not present in the individual components.

Typically, a composite consists of a matrix phase that binds reinforcement, which provides strength and stiffness. Common combinations include polymer matrices with glass, carbon, or aramid fibers; metal matrices with ceramic reinforcements; and ceramic matrices with ceramic fibers. These systems are categorized as polymer matrix composites (PMCs), metal matrix composites (MMCs), and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs).

Manufacturing methods vary, including hand layup, filament winding, resin transfer molding, pultrusion, and increasingly additive manufacturing. Properties are highly anisotropic and can be tailored by fiber orientation, resin content, and processing.

Advantages of composites include high strength-to-weight ratio, stiffness, corrosion resistance, and design flexibility. Challenges include higher material costs, complex damage modes such as delamination, and recycling or end-of-life disposal.

Applications span aerospace, automotive, wind energy, sporting goods, and construction. Ongoing research focuses on improving toughness, damage tolerance, heat resistance, and recyclability.
