These massive limbs can be several feet in diameter and weigh many tons, often appearing as significant structural elements of the tree.

The formation of jättegrenar can be attributed to several factors. In some cases, they are a result of the tree's natural growth pattern, where a few dominant branches outcompete others for resources. Old, mature trees are more likely to develop these substantial limbs. Environmental conditions also play a role; for instance, trees that have experienced significant damage or stress in their past might reallocate growth to a few select branches. Repeated pruning or damage can also encourage the development of very thick, strong branches over time.

These large branches are a notable feature in forests and parks, sometimes becoming focal points for admiration or curiosity.
