Jälkiehkäisy, commonly known as emergency contraception or the morning-after pill, refers to contraceptive methods used after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure to prevent pregnancy. It is not intended for regular use as a primary form of birth control.

The most common methods of emergency contraception include hormonal pills and the copper intrauterine device (IUD). Hormonal emergency contraception typically contains either levonorgestrel or ulipristal acetate. Levonorgestrel pills are most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, ideally within 72 hours, though they may offer some efficacy up to 120 hours. Ulipristal acetate pills are generally considered more effective than levonorgestrel pills, especially in the later part of the fertile window, and can be taken up to 120 hours after unprotected intercourse. These hormonal methods work primarily by delaying or inhibiting ovulation. They are not abortifacients, meaning they do not end an established pregnancy.

The copper IUD is the most effective form of emergency contraception and can be inserted up to five days after unprotected intercourse. It prevents pregnancy by releasing copper ions, which are toxic to sperm and eggs, and by altering the uterine lining, making it unreceptive to implantation. If pregnancy has already occurred, the copper IUD will not be effective.

Access to emergency contraception varies by region. In some places, it is available over-the-counter without a prescription, while in others, a prescription is required. It is advisable to seek medical advice for proper guidance on its use and availability.
