Izérzészavar, often translated as taste disorder, refers to any abnormality in the sense of taste. This can manifest in several ways, including the complete absence of taste (ageusia), a reduced ability to taste (hypogeusia), a distorted sense of taste (dysgeusia), or the perception of taste when no stimulus is present (phantogeusia).

The causes of izérzészavar are diverse. Medical conditions such as upper respiratory infections, head injuries, and neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's can affect taste perception. Certain medications, particularly those used in chemotherapy or for conditions like high blood pressure, can also induce taste disturbances. Poor oral hygiene and dental problems can contribute to altered tastes. Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of zinc, are also implicated. Age can naturally lead to a decline in taste sensitivity. Exposure to certain chemicals or radiation therapy to the head and neck area can damage taste receptors.

Diagnosis typically involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and specific taste testing. Treatment depends entirely on the underlying cause. If a medication is responsible, altering or discontinuing it may resolve the issue. Addressing underlying medical conditions or nutritional deficiencies can also restore normal taste function. In cases where the cause is irreversible, management strategies may focus on enhancing flavor through spices, herbs, and varied textures to improve the enjoyment of food and maintain adequate nutrition.
