Isometrikus kontrakció, often referred to as izomkontrakciót in Hungarian, is a type of muscle contraction where the muscle generates force without changing its length. In this process, the muscle fibers contract and pull against a fixed object or resistance, but the overall length of the muscle remains constant. This is in contrast to isotonic contraction, where the muscle length changes, leading to movement.

During an isometric contraction, the actin and myosin filaments within the muscle fibers slide past each other, but they do not move past each other far enough to shorten the entire muscle. Instead, the tension within the muscle increases. This type of contraction is crucial for maintaining posture, stabilizing joints, and holding objects in place. For example, when you stand, the muscles in your legs and back are engaged in isometric contractions to keep you upright. Similarly, gripping an object involves isometric contraction of the forearm muscles.

While no external movement occurs, internal muscle work is being done. This can lead to muscle fatigue over time if the contraction is sustained for an extended period. Isometric exercises, which involve holding a static position against resistance, are often used in physical therapy and strength training to build muscle endurance and stability. The force generated during an isometric contraction depends on factors such as the size of the muscle, the number of motor units recruited, and the angle of the joint.
