Kontrakció is a term used in several disciplines to denote a process of shortening, narrowing, or bringing elements closer together. It is derived from the Latin contractio and is used in various languages with related meanings of reduction or compression.

In linguistics, kontrakció refers to the creation of a shortened form of a word or phrase, typically by omitting sounds or letters and sometimes combining elements. Common examples include English don’t from do not, can’t from can not, and it’s from it is. Contractions reflect speech patterns and syntactic boundaries and often involve phonological changes such as vowel reduction or assimilation.

In biology and medicine, kontrakció designates the activation of muscle fibers generating tension and shortening of muscle length. Contractions can be voluntary, as in purposeful movement, or involuntary, as in cramps. They are described as isotonic or isometric depending on whether the muscle changes length during contraction.

In mathematics, a kontrakció (contraction) is a mapping on a metric space that brings points closer together by a fixed factor: there exists a constant 0 ≤ k < 1 such that the distance between the images is at most k times the distance between the inputs. Contractions underpin fixed-point results, notably the Banach fixed-point theorem.
