istiqamat

Istiqamat (Arabic: استقامة) is a noun derived from the verb istiqaama, meaning to stand firm or be upright. In Islamic usage, it denotes steadfastness and consistency in belief and conduct: remaining on the straight path, adhering to religious duties, and acting with integrity in daily life.

In the Qur’an, believers are urged to maintain istiqama, to stand firm in accordance with the commands given to them, and not to deviate from righteousness. The concept is presented as a core standard for personal and communal life, linking correct belief with moral action and sincere intention. It is often cited as a benchmark for perseverance against temptations and deviations.

In Sunni Islam, istiqama is typically understood as steady adherence to the revealed law (sharia) and the prophetic example, encompassing worship, ethical behavior, and avoidance of hypocrisy. In Sufi and other spiritual currents within Islam, it is also associated with inner steadiness: continuous remembrance of God, purification of the heart, and perseverance on the spiritual path, usually alongside patience, trust in God, and gratitude.

Today the term is widely used across Muslim communities and scholarship. It appears in many languages in forms such as istikamet and is valued as a practical ideal encouraging consistency rather than sporadic piety. It can be applied to personal reform, education, or public ethics.
