Isostaattinen refers to a state or process where pressure is applied uniformly from all directions. This concept is frequently encountered in materials science and engineering, particularly in relation to powder metallurgy and ceramics processing. In isostatic pressing, a powder or a green compact (a pre-formed shape made from powder) is enclosed in a flexible container and subjected to hydrostatic pressure. This pressure is transmitted through a fluid medium, such as water or gas, ensuring that the pressure is equal on all surfaces of the object.

There are two primary types of isostatic pressing: cold isostatic pressing (CIP) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Cold isostatic pressing is performed at or near room temperature. It is effective for densifying powders and consolidating them into solid shapes, improving their mechanical properties like strength and reducing porosity. Hot isostatic pressing, on the other hand, is carried out at elevated temperatures and high pressures. HIP is often used as a post-processing step after initial sintering to further densify components, heal internal voids, and improve material properties, especially for complex shapes or materials that are difficult to sinter conventionally. The uniform pressure in isostatic processes helps to avoid distortion and ensures consistent density throughout the part.
