The technique leverages the principle of electroosmosis, where ions move in response to an electric field, allowing for targeted treatment of specific areas of the body. This method is commonly used for conditions such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), localized inflammation, and muscle pain, as well as for the administration of certain medications like corticosteroids or antibiotics.

The process involves placing electrodes on the skin, with one delivering a positive charge (anode) and the other a negative charge (cathode). A mild electric current is then applied, facilitating the penetration of ionized substances into the underlying tissues. For hyperhidrosis, iontophoresis often employs a solution of water and a small amount of salt, which helps to block sweat gland activity when applied to the palms or soles of the feet.

Ionotherapy is generally considered safe when performed by trained professionals, though potential side effects may include mild skin irritation, redness, or discomfort at the application site. Contractions, such as open wounds, severe skin conditions, or the presence of pacemakers, may limit its use.
