Ioniluonne is a Finnish term that translates to "ionic character" or "ionic nature" in English. It describes the degree to which a chemical bond possesses ionic characteristics, as opposed to covalent characteristics. In essence, it quantifies how much electron transfer occurs between two atoms when they form a bond.

Pure ionic bonds involve the complete transfer of electrons from one atom to another, resulting in the formation of distinct positively and negatively charged ions. These ions are then held together by electrostatic attraction. Conversely, pure covalent bonds involve the sharing of electrons between atoms. In reality, most chemical bonds fall somewhere on a spectrum between purely ionic and purely covalent.

The degree of ionic character in a bond is influenced by factors such as the electronegativity difference between the bonded atoms. A larger electronegativity difference generally leads to a higher degree of ionic character. For example, the bond between sodium (low electronegativity) and chlorine (high electronegativity) in sodium chloride is highly ionic.
