While less common than interplate earthquakes, intraplate seismic activity can still be significant and cause considerable damage, especially in areas not accustomed to seismic shaking.

Notable examples of intraplattjordbävningar include the New Madrid earthquakes in the central United States in 1811-1812, which were among the most powerful earthquakes in North American history. Other significant intraplate seismic zones are found in Australia, India, and parts of the African continent. Understanding these events is crucial for seismic hazard assessment and mitigation in regions not traditionally considered at high risk.
