An intervalometer is a timer device used with cameras to automate the shutter release at set intervals. It is chiefly used for time-lapse photography and long-exposure sequences, allowing many frames to be captured without manual triggering. Modern intervalometers are usually external units connected to a camera’s remote shutter port, though some cameras include built-in intervalometers or wireless controls.

Operation involves selecting the interval between frames, the exposure duration for each frame, and the total number of frames (or overall duration). Additional options may include a start delay, bracketing, and multi-shot per interval. For star trails or long-night exposures, the interval is often longer than the exposure; for fast time-lapses, interval and exposure are short and frequent. Some models offer multiple channels to trigger more than one device.

Types range from mechanical intervalometers, which rely on simple timing mechanisms, to electronic models that use microprocessors and programmable firmware. External units connect via the camera’s shutter port; some offer USB, Bluetooth, or wireless control. Many cameras now include built-in intervalometers, reducing the need for a separate device.

Applications include landscape, astrophotography, macro, and urban time-lapse work, as well as long-exposure sequences such as light-painting or meteor trails. When choosing a unit, compatibility with the camera model, power requirements, and desired features are key considerations.
