Interoperability, often shortened to interop, is the ability of different systems, organizations, or software to exchange information and use the exchanged data effectively. In practice, it involves both how data is transmitted (syntactic interoperability) and whether the receiving system can interpret and apply the meaning of that data (semantic interoperability). Achieving interop typically requires common data formats, compatible protocols, shared vocabularies, and agreed-upon rules for data exchange.

Standards and governance play a central role in interoperability. Open standards, open APIs, and common data models enable diverse systems to interoperate without bespoke adapters. Conformance testing and certification programs help verify that implementations meet specified requirements. Interoperability efforts are pursued across industries by standards bodies, government initiatives, industry consortia, and vendor communities.

Applications span many domains. In computing networks, the TCP/IP protocol suite enables global connectivity and information exchange. In healthcare, standards such as HL7 and FHIR aim to allow patient data to move between electronic health records and other systems. In finance, messaging standards like SWIFT support cross-border transactions. Public sector and manufacturing sectors similarly rely on interoperable data and services to coordinate operations and enable services.

Challenges remain, including aligning evolving standards, ensuring security and privacy, preventing vendor lock-in, and integrating legacy systems. Despite these barriers, interoperability is viewed as essential for efficiency, scalable innovation, and the effective use of data across disparate platforms. Future trends emphasize semantic enrichment, interoperable APIs, and governance frameworks that balance openness with security.
