Intermediarier is a term used to describe a person or entity that acts as an intermediary between two or more parties in a transaction, exchange, or process. Although not common in standard English, it can be understood as a general version of intermediary, middleman, broker, or facilitator, and may appear in niche or historical contexts. An intermediarier helps connect buyers and sellers, lenders and borrowers, or information producers and consumers, and often performs negotiation, verification, and coordination tasks rather than creating goods or services themselves.

Roles and types: economic intermediaries include retailers, wholesalers, distributors, agents, and brokers who reduce search and transaction costs and provide financing or risk management. Information intermediaries curate and disseminate knowledge, such as rating agencies, data brokers, and search engines. Digital platforms, marketplaces, and APIs can also act as intermediaries by connecting users, enabling payments, and mediating trust through reviews and compliance.

Benefits and drawbacks: intermediaries can increase efficiency, liquidity, and access to markets, but they may also add costs, reduce price transparency, or create incentives for rent-seeking. Information-centric intermediaries can raise privacy concerns or contribute to information asymmetries if not properly regulated. Dependence on a dominant intermediary can raise systemic risk and affect competition.

History and terminology: intermediaries have existed since ancient trade, with merchants and arbitrageurs performing early intermediary roles. The standard term in modern usage is intermediary or middleman; intermediarier appears rarely and is not widely recognized.
