Intendancies refers to a historical system of administration in which royal or centralized authorities appoint officials, called intendants, to govern provinces or districts. The term derives from the French intendance, itself from intendant, meaning administrator. The concept emphasizes centralized oversight, with the intendants serving as the direct link between the central government and local administration.

In France, the intendancy system was developed under Louis XIV as part of a broader effort to strengthen royal authority and reduce the power of local assemblies and aristocratic courts. Intendants were usually royal civil servants charged with supervising finances, justice, policing, taxation, and military manpower within their districts. They acted as inspectors, collectors of revenue, and conveyors of royal policy, reporting directly to the central administration. The system expanded through much of the 17th and 18th centuries and became a hallmark of centralized state administration, until it was challenged during the French Revolution and restructured in the following decades.

A parallel development occurred in the Spanish and Portuguese empires as part of the Bourbon reforms in the 18th century. The equivalent office, the intendant (intendente), and the territorial division called an intendencia were introduced to improve revenue collection, governance, and control over local elites. Intendentes led administrative departments that reorganized former corregimientos and other jurisdictions, strengthening central oversight and bureaucratic capacity in much of Spanish America and the Philippines. The system influenced administrative practice for reform-era governance and, in some places, persisted into the early 19th century.

Today, intendancies are largely historical in most contexts, though the term remains in use in some regions to describe historical administrative divisions or offices.
