Institutionalism, in its various forms, is a broad approach in social sciences that emphasizes the role of institutions in shaping human behavior and societal outcomes. It moves beyond simply viewing individuals as rational actors pursuing their self-interest and instead highlights how established norms, rules, laws, organizations, and cultural practices influence decision-making and collective action.

There are several strands of institutionalism. Historical institutionalism, for instance, focuses on how past decisions and the path of development, once set, constrain or enable future choices. This concept of "path dependency" is central, suggesting that early institutional arrangements can have lasting and significant impacts. Rational choice institutionalism, on the other hand, views institutions as rules that help actors overcome collective action problems and achieve their goals more efficiently, often by reducing transaction costs and providing predictable frameworks. Sociological institutionalism emphasizes the cultural and normative aspects of institutions, arguing that individuals conform to institutional expectations not just out of self-interest but also because these expectations are seen as legitimate or socially appropriate.

All forms of institutionalism, however, share a common thread: institutions are not merely external constraints but are often internalized by individuals, shaping their preferences and identities. Understanding these institutional frameworks is considered crucial for analyzing social, economic, and political phenomena.
