Insect stages refer to the distinct phases in the life cycle of an insect. These stages are a fundamental aspect of insect development and are often characterized by significant changes in morphology, physiology, and behavior. The specific sequence and nature of these stages vary depending on the insect order, with two primary types of metamorphosis governing these life cycles: complete metamorphosis and incomplete metamorphosis.

Insects undergoing complete metamorphosis, such as butterflies, beetles, and flies, progress through four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The egg hatches into a larva, which is typically a worm-like form focused on feeding and growth. The larva then transforms into a pupa, a quiescent stage where radical internal reorganization occurs, often within a protective casing. Finally, the adult insect emerges from the pupa, a winged and reproductive form.

Insects with incomplete metamorphosis, like grasshoppers, dragonflies, and cockroaches, have a simpler life cycle with three main stages: egg, nymph, and adult. The egg hatches into a nymph, which resembles a smaller, wingless version of the adult. The nymph undergoes a series of molts, shedding its exoskeleton to grow larger. With each molt, it gradually develops adult features, such as wings, until it reaches its final adult form. This gradual development means there is no distinct pupal stage. Understanding these insect stages is crucial for comprehending insect biology, ecology, and pest management.
