Inline skates consist of a boot, a frame, and a wheel set mounted in a straight line under the boot. The boot provides support and fit, with ankle and cuff features for stability. The frame connects the boot to the wheels and determines wheel placement and balance. Wheel sizes typically range from about 70 to 110 millimeters in diameter, with larger wheels favoring speed and smaller wheels offering agility. Bearings reduce friction, and many models include a braking system, usually at the rear, to help control speed and stop safely.

Types of inline skates vary by intended use. Fitness and recreational skates prioritize comfort and stability for long rides. Speed skates use larger wheels and a low-cut boot for power transfer and higher top speeds. Urban or aggressive skates are built for tricks and rough surfaces, featuring reinforced frames and grind plates. Artistic inline skates are used in inline figure skating, emphasizing balance and precise footwork.

Use and safety are central to the practice of inlineskateet. Skating takes place on paved paths, skating rinks, and street-friendly surfaces. Protective gear is strongly recommended, including a helmet, wrist guards, knee and elbow pads, and, in some cases, ankle protection. Training often begins with balance work, proper stance, and falling techniques to minimize injury risk.
