Infrastructure as Code (IaC) is the practice of managing and provisioning computing infrastructure through machine-readable configuration files rather than manual hardware setup or interactive configuration. IaC aims to enable repeatable, auditable, and scalable infrastructure deployment across environments such as cloud, on-premises, and hybrid systems.

Two primary approaches characterize IaC: declarative and imperative. Declarative IaC describes the desired end state of the infrastructure, letting the tooling determine the steps to achieve it. Imperative IaC specifies the exact commands to run to reach a target state. Most IaC tools emphasize idempotence, ensuring repeated executions do not produce unintended changes. IaC also emphasizes version control, enabling change history, collaboration, and rollback.

Common tools and languages include Terraform, CloudFormation, and Pulumi, which provide declarative configuration for provisioning resources; Ansible, Chef, Puppet, and SaltStack offer configuration management and automation, often blending declarative and procedural styles. Configuration is typically expressed in domain-specific languages or general-purpose languages, and configurations are stored alongside application code.

Benefits of IaC include faster provisioning, consistent environments, easy rollback, improved collaboration, and better compliance through auditable change logs. Challenges involve managing sensitive information, handling secret management, dealing with configuration drift, securing state data, and selecting among diverse tools. Effective IaC adoption often integrates with CI/CD pipelines, enforces testing and validation, and establishes governance and security practices for environments and data.

In practice, IaC enables reproducible infrastructure for development, testing, and production, supporting scalable and agile delivery while reducing human error.
