Infrapunaisuusyhteys, often referred to as an infrared connection or IrDA (Infrared Data Association) connection, is a short-range wireless communication technology. It utilizes infrared light to transmit data between devices. Similar to how a television remote control works, the devices need to be within a direct line of sight of each other and relatively close, typically within a few meters, for the connection to function reliably.

This technology was once common in mobile phones, laptops, and personal digital assistants (PDAs) for tasks such as file sharing, printing, and establishing basic network connections. The speed of infrared connections varies depending on the specific IrDA standard implemented, but it generally offers lower bandwidth compared to modern wireless technologies like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

The primary advantage of infrapunaisuusyhteys was its simplicity and low power consumption. It did not require complex pairing procedures and was inherently secure within its limited range, as the infrared signal could not easily penetrate solid objects or travel long distances. However, its limitations, including the need for line-of-sight and relatively slow speeds, led to its gradual decline in popularity as more advanced wireless communication methods became widespread.
