Infrapunaisuusyhteys

Infrapunaisuusyhteys, known in English as IrDA, refers to a short-range wireless technology standard that uses infrared light to transmit data between devices. Developed by the Infrared Data Association, it allows for communication between computers, mobile phones, printers, and other electronic devices within a limited range, typically up to one meter. This technology functions similarly to a television remote control, using invisible infrared light pulses to send information.

The primary application of IrDA was for point-to-point communication, enabling tasks like transferring files between laptops or synchronizing data with personal digital assistants. It required a clear line of sight between the transmitting and receiving infrared ports, meaning no obstructions could be present. While once a common feature on many portable devices, its prevalence has significantly decreased with the rise of more versatile and robust wireless technologies such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. These newer standards offer greater range, speed, and the ability to connect to multiple devices simultaneously, largely superseding the need for IrDA in most consumer applications. However, IrDA technology may still be found in some specialized industrial or legacy systems where its specific characteristics are still advantageous.
