Inflammeret is a Danish and Norwegian adjective meaning inflamed. It is the past participle form of the verb inflammere and is used to describe tissue that has undergone inflammation. The term appears in both medical and everyday language, for example inflammeret øje (inflamed eye) or inflammeret hud (inflamed skin).

Inflammation is the body’s protective response to harmful stimuli such as infections, damaged cells, or irritants. It involves immune cells, blood vessels, and molecular mediators, and can be acute, resolving within days, or chronic if the irritant persists. An inflammed area commonly shows redness, heat, swelling, pain, and sometimes reduced function. While inflammation helps to contain injury and promote healing, excessive or prolonged inflammation can cause tissue damage.

Causes of inflammation are varied and include infections (bacterial, viral, fungal), physical injury, autoimmune or autoinflammatory disorders, allergic reactions, and exposure to irritants or toxins. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve measures such as rest, local care (compression, ice), and analgesics or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce pain and swelling. Infections may require antibiotics, while autoimmune or chronic inflammatory conditions may demand more targeted therapies, including corticosteroids or disease-modifying treatments. Addressing the trigger often improves the inflammatory response.

Diagnosis is typically clinical, based on symptoms and examination, but may be supplemented with blood tests, imaging, or tissue sampling to identify the cause. Prognosis varies with the etiology and effectiveness of management. The term inflammeret is primarily used in Danish and, to a lesser extent, Norwegian to describe tissue state in which inflammation is present.
