Infektøse is an adjective used to describe diseases or pathogens that can be transmitted from an infected individual to others, leading to infection. The term covers a broad range of agents, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, and it highlights the potential for spread within a population rather than the severity of illness alone.

Transmission occurs through multiple routes. Direct contact, droplets from coughing or sneezing, airborne spread, vector-borne transmission by insects, and transmission via contaminated surfaces or objects (fomites) are all examples. Some infectious agents are contagious only during certain stages of illness, while others may be contagious before symptoms appear or continue to be contagious even after recovery.

Infectiousness, the core idea behind infektøse, is influenced by pathogen properties (such as virulence and replication rate), host factors (immune status and behavior), and environmental conditions (crowding, sanitation, ventilation). The ease with which an infection spreads is often described using measures such as the basic reproduction number (R0) and secondary attack rates, which help gauge outbreak potential and the impact of interventions.

Public health responses focus on reducing transmission and protecting vulnerable populations. Measures include vaccination, good hygiene practices, isolation and quarantine when appropriate, use of personal protective equipment, improved ventilation, and rapid case finding and contact tracing. Surveillance and reporting systems help detect outbreaks early and inform control strategies. While infektøse emphasizes transmissibility, public health aims to break chains of transmission and minimize the overall burden of disease.
