Incompatibilism is a philosophical position concerning the relationship between free will and determinism. It asserts that if determinism is true, then free will does not exist, and conversely, if free will exists, then determinism must be false. Incompatibilists generally fall into one of two main camps: libertarians and hard determinists.

Libertarians are incompatibilists who believe that humans possess free will and therefore reject determinism. They argue that agents have the ability to make choices that are not causally necessitated by prior events and the laws of nature. This often involves positing a special kind of agency or causation that allows for genuine alternative possibilities.

Hard determinists, on the other hand, are incompatibilists who accept determinism and therefore reject the existence of free will. They maintain that all events, including human actions, are the inevitable outcome of preceding causes. Consequently, the feeling of making free choices is considered an illusion.

A third position within incompatibilism is hard incompatibilism. This view claims that free will is incompatible with determinism and also incompatible with indeterminism. Therefore, regardless of whether the universe is deterministic or not, we do not have free will. This position is less common than libertarianism or hard determinism. The debate between these positions centers on the nature of causality, moral responsibility, and the experience of human agency.
