Image composition, a term used across photography, painting, film, and digital media, refers to the arrangement of visual elements within a frame. Good composition helps control viewers’ attention, creates a sense of order, and supports the intended meaning or mood of an image. Composition combines subject placement, camera or viewpoint, framing, and the use of lines, shapes, light, and color.

Common principles include the rule of thirds, where key elements align with imaginary lines dividing the frame into nine equal parts; the golden ratio, which guides placement toward harmonious proportions; balance, achieved through symmetrical or asymmetrical layouts; leading lines that guide the eye toward the subject; framing, where elements in the scene act as a border within the frame; depth created by foreground, middle ground, and background; negative space that isolates the subject; and emphasis on a focal point.

Techniques to achieve effective composition include using a grid or the viewer’s intuition to place important elements off-center, varying vantage points for depth, and controlling light and color to strengthen contrast and mood. Cropping and framing decisions, especially in editing, can alter perceived importance and balance without changing the shot’s content.

Composition is influenced by genre and purpose. Portraits, landscapes, street photography, and still lifes each have preferences for headroom, horizon placement, or simplification. In contemporary practice, artists may intentionally break rules to create tension or to suit narrative goals, but understanding classic guidelines provides a foundation for deliberate, coherent imagery.
