Imageappearance, commonly written as image appearance, refers to the perceived visual characteristics of a digital image as observed by a viewer. It embodies how colors, brightness, contrast, texture, shading, and spatial structure combine to convey scene content under a given viewing condition. Because appearance depends on scene illumination, camera sensor response, imaging pipeline, and display characteristics, the same scene can appear different under different conditions.

Key elements include color appearance (hue, saturation, lightness), luminance distribution, contrast and dynamic range, texture and fine detail, edge sharpness, and noise. Color appearance models, such as CIECAM02 or CAM16, seek to predict how colors will appear under changes in illumination, adaptation, and viewing environment, and are used in color management and image rendering.

Appearance modeling in computer vision and graphics splits into perceptual modeling and algorithmic processing. Perceptual modeling aims to predict or alter the image as it would be seen by humans, while algorithmic processing may adjust appearance for tasks such as color correction, tone mapping, rendering, or augmented reality. Techniques include intrinsic image decomposition (separating reflectance from shading), tone-mapping operators for HDR, and texture synthesis that preserves perceptual appearance.

Applications span digital photography, film and video post-production, computer graphics, virtual and augmented reality, and image search where appearance features influence similarity judgments. Evaluation of appearance often combines objective metrics with perceptual studies to account for human vision.

Challenges include display variability, viewing geometry, material properties, and subjective differences in appearance perception, which complicate cross-device rendering and consistent quality.
