Ilmavirrua is a term used in meteorology to describe a localized convective air-flow pattern that forms when heated surface air rises and interacts with nearby topography, such as valleys, ridges, or urban structures. The word combines ilma, Finnish for air, with virrua, a constructed element intended to convey flowing motion. The concept serves as a descriptive label for transient, curtain-like currents that can transport heat, moisture, and aerosols over short distances.

Formation and characteristics: Ilmavirrua develops under clear, sunny conditions with strong surface heating. When ascending air encounters obstructions or channeling by terrain, a narrow plume forms, often with a vertical extent of hundreds of meters and horizontal scales of tens to a few hundred meters. The phenomenon typically lasts from several minutes to a few hours and may be accompanied by localized gusts along its margins. It is most commonly observed in complex terrain such as river valleys, coastal zones, or urban canyons.

Measurement and significance: Scientists detect ilmavirrua via ground-based weather stations, Doppler lidar, and drone- or aircraft-based thermal imaging.
