Ilmavaihdon is a Finnish term that translates to "air exchange" or "ventilation" in English. It refers to the process of replacing stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air. This process is crucial for maintaining good indoor air quality and a healthy living or working environment. Ilmavaihdon can be achieved through various methods, including natural ventilation and mechanical ventilation.

Natural ilmavaihdon occurs when air moves in and out of a building due to pressure differences caused by wind, temperature variations, or the stack effect. This can be facilitated by opening windows, doors, or vents. While simple and cost-effective, natural ventilation can be unpredictable and may not provide adequate air exchange in certain conditions, especially in tightly sealed modern buildings.

Mechanical ilmavaihdon, on the other hand, uses fans to control the flow of air. This can range from simple exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms to sophisticated heat recovery ventilation (HRV) or energy recovery ventilation (ERV) systems. These systems actively push fresh air in and exhaust stale air out, ensuring a consistent and controlled level of ventilation.
