Ilmatu is a traditional Finnish sauna, which is a small, heated room used for relaxation and cleansing. The word "ilmatu" is derived from the Finnish words "ilma," meaning air, and "tuu," meaning to heat. This name reflects the sauna's primary function of heating the air to high temperatures, typically between 70 to 100 degrees Celsius (158 to 212 degrees Fahrenheit), to induce sweating and promote physical and mental relaxation.

The use of saunas in Finland dates back to ancient times, with evidence of sauna use found in archaeological sites dating to the Bronze Age. Today, saunas are an integral part of Finnish culture and are commonly found in homes, workplaces, and public spaces. They are typically made of wood and feature a simple design, with a small door for entry and a larger door for exiting, allowing steam to escape.

The traditional Finnish sauna experience involves several stages. First, the body is cleansed with a lye bath to remove dirt and sweat. Next, the individual enters the sauna and sits or lies down, allowing the body to heat up and sweat. After a period of time, usually 15 to 30 minutes, the person exits the sauna and immediately enters a cool room or bath to cool down and rehydrate. This process is often repeated several times during a sauna session.
