Ihmisvirtoina, also known as human trafficking, is a serious crime involving the exploitation of individuals for labor or sexual purposes. It is a global issue that affects people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. Human trafficking can occur within a country or across borders, and it often involves the use of force, fraud, or coercion to control victims.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) defines human trafficking as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs.

Human trafficking can be categorized into two main types: labor trafficking and sex trafficking. Labor trafficking involves the exploitation of victims for forced or compulsory labor, while sex trafficking involves the exploitation of victims for sexual purposes, including prostitution, pornography, and forced marriage.

The United Nations estimates that there are approximately 40.3 million people trapped in modern slavery worldwide, with an estimated 24.9 million in forced labor and 15.4 million in forced marriage and forced prostitution. The majority of victims are women and girls, but men and boys are also affected.

Efforts to combat human trafficking involve law enforcement, international cooperation, and public awareness campaigns. Organizations such as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UNODC work to raise awareness, provide support to victims, and advocate for stronger laws and policies to prevent and punish human trafficking.
