iedurt

Iedurt is a municipality located in the province of Zaragoza in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain. Situated at an altitude of approximately 510 metres above sea level, the town lies on the southern foothills of the Sierra de la Pila and encompasses an area of roughly 35 hectares. According to the most recent census data from 2022, Iedurt has an estimated population of 430 residents, who are commonly referred to as Iedurtes or Ieduertes.

Historical records trace the origins of Iedurt back to the Middle Ages, with the earliest documentary reference recorded in 1245. The local economy was traditionally based on agriculture—particularly olive cultivation and cereal farming—as well as sheep grazing. In the 19th century, a modest railway station was established to link Iedurt with the larger urban centers of Zaragoza and Huesca, facilitating regional commerce and travel.

A prominent landmark is the Church of San Juan Bautista, built in the Baroque style during the 18th century. The church features a simple bell tower and a well-preserved fresco of the Last Judgment in its interior. The town’s economy today revolves around rural tourism, artisanal crafts, and the production of ornamental pottery, which is closely tied to Aragon’s cultural heritage.

Iedurt also hosts an annual festival in September to honour its patron saint. The town prides itself on its well-preserved traditional balconies, stone pathways, and the overall architectural cohesion that reflects the historical aesthetic of the Aragonese countryside.
