idomeneus

Idomeneus was a prominent figure in Greek mythology, known primarily for his role as a king of Crete and a warrior in the Trojan War. He was the son of King Deucalion of Crete and the grandson of King Minos. Idomeneus was one of Helen's many suitors, and as such, he swore an oath to protect her and her husband Menelaus, which obligated him to join the Greek expedition to Troy.

During the Trojan War, Idomeneus was a respected and brave warrior, leading forty ships from Crete. He distinguished himself in numerous battles, often fighting alongside other prominent Greek heroes. His prowess in combat was well-noted, and he is credited with killing several Trojan warriors, including the Lycians Alcathous and Ennomus, as well as the Trojan prince Othryoneus.

One of the most significant episodes involving Idomeneus occurred when he made a vow to Poseidon, the god of the sea. He promised to sacrifice the first living thing he saw upon his safe return to Crete if he survived the war. Tragically, the first creature he encountered was his own son. Idomeneus, bound by his vow, fulfilled his promise, a deed that brought him immense grief and condemnation from his people. This act ultimately led to his banishment from Crete. After his exile, he is said to have traveled to Italy and founded a city named after himself, although the specifics of his later life vary in different accounts.
