Visually, a hyposensitive individual might not notice things happening in their periphery or might struggle to track moving objects. Auditorily, they might not hear someone calling their name or might seem unresponsive to sounds. Tactilely, they might not feel light touch or might have a high pain threshold. Vestibularly, they might not feel dizzy from spinning or might crave intense movement. Olfactory and gustatory hyposensitivity can lead to a lack of reaction to strong smells or tastes, or a preference for very intense flavors.

Hyposensitivity is often observed within the broader context of sensory processing disorder, and it is not a diagnosis in itself. It can be present in individuals with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, or it can occur independently. Understanding hyposensitivity is crucial for providing appropriate support and accommodations, helping individuals to engage more effectively with their environment and meet their sensory needs.
