This process is most commonly applied to unsaturated organic compounds, such as alkenes and alkynes, where it converts them into saturated compounds, typically alkanes. This conversion involves breaking the double or triple bonds within the molecule and forming new single bonds with hydrogen atoms.

The reaction usually requires a catalyst to proceed at a reasonable rate and under practical conditions. Common catalysts include transition metals like platinum, palladium, and nickel. These catalysts provide a surface where the hydrogen molecules can adsorb and dissociate into individual atoms, making them more reactive towards the unsaturated substrate. It is also employed in processes like the reduction of nitro compounds to amines and the synthesis of various organic intermediates.
