Høvle is a term used in Danish and Norwegian that refers to the act of planing wood and to the hand tool used for this purpose. The aim is to create a flat, smooth surface by shaving thin layers from the wood, a fundamental operation in carpentry and woodworking.

A hand plane typically has a solid body made of wood or metal, a cutting blade (iron) mounted at an adjustable angle, and a cap or lever mechanism. The blade protrudes from the plane’s sole and, when pushed along the workpiece, cuts thin shavings. The tool is guided by a front knob and a rear handle, which help control stance, pressure, and direction.

Types of planes range from long jointer and jack planes to shorter smoothing planes, as well as block planes. Longer planes straighten and flatten high spots, while shorter planes finish surfaces and ease transitions. Block planes are commonly used for end grain, trimming, and fine adjustments. Selection depends on the workpiece size, grain direction, and the desired smoothness.

Technique involves aligning with or against the grain, maintaining a consistent bite depth, and applying even pressure along the length of the stroke. It is important to prepare the surface, check flatness with a straightedge, and take shallow, controlled cuts. Proper blade sharpness and set are essential for clean shavings and a true surface.

Maintenance includes regular sharpening of the iron, flattening the back, and ensuring the bevel is precise. Tuning the mouth opening, cleaning residues, and storing the tool with care prolongs its performance.
