The construction of a typical steam radiator involves a series of hollow sections, often made of cast iron or steel. These sections are connected to form a larger heating surface. As steam enters the radiator, it fills these sections. The steam's temperature is typically above the desired room temperature, facilitating heat transfer. As the steam cools and condenses, it turns back into water, which then typically flows back to the boiler through a return pipe.

Steam heating systems offer several advantages, including rapid heating and the ability to deliver a significant amount of heat. However, they also require careful management of water levels and pressure within the system. Early steam radiators were often large and ornate, reflecting the design aesthetics of their time, while modern versions can be more streamlined and efficient.
